Holden Barina cars
Holden brand dates since 1856, when it was started a really small business in South Australia. But, in time, the company grew due to its innovations on the automobile market, being nowadays one of the seven fully-integrated global General Motors operations.
Though, the first Holden Barina car was produced in 1985. Since then, six successful generations were delivered till present, and five of them have been badge-engineered versions of different General Motors vehicles as: Daewoo Kalos, Suzuki Cultus and Opel Corsa. 42 models, classified in four vehicle body styles, are produced by Holden’s Vehicle Operations.
General Motors strives to permanently improve Holden Barina designs, safety systems and performances.
For example, Holden design has significantly increased, displaying more flexibility, excitement and passion. A team with over one hundred members works for the Australia’s largest automotive design studio in Port Melbourne. Every time a new model it’s conceived, 5 important things are kept in mind: the car must be roomy and spacious on the inside; in the mean time, it should not be too big on the outside; in addition the vehicle needs to be practical and safe; even more, it should be athletic, meaning a wide track, taut curves and short overhangs; finally, classic rear drive proportion is carefully analyzed and implemented.
Concerning the vehicles’ safety, Barina incorporates a range of carefully engineered safety systems. The target is to make each new model safer than the one it replaces. Safety systems can be divided in two categories, presented below.
The first class would be composed by the active safety systems which monitor on-road dynamics up to 200 times a second. When the accepted tolerances regarding vehicle’s speed, steering wheel angle or lateral acceleration and rotation are exceeded, particular safety systems activate in order to offer a maximum control and stability of the car. Among the multitude mechanism, Holden Barina vehicles use the followings: Electronic Stability Control – applying break pressure to individual wheels, Traction Control System – reducing wheelspin when accelerating on wet or icy roads, Anti-lock Braking System – improving braking efficiency by reducing stopping distances, Electronic Brake Assist – maximizing braking pressure in order to optimize braking performances and, finally, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution – regulating the break force applied to each wheel.
The second class is composed by the passive systems diversity. All these mechanisms are designed to prevent collisions or even to protect as much as possible the car, during an accident. There are six passive safety systems used by Holden Barina producers: the Pyrotechnic Seatbelt Pretensioners – forcing the front seatbelt buckles toward the cabin floor, whenever an impact occurs, the Load limiters – controlling the level of force applied to an occupant during an accident, Curtain and side impact airbags – providing an additional chest and thorax protection for the front passengers, and, finally, the Emergency shutdown – unlocking the doors, turning the interior lights on and turning off the engine and fuel pump if battery power is available.
The first generation of Holden Barina, MB, reached the market on 1985 and was a five-door hatchback badge-engineered Suzuki Cultus. The facelifted ML was revealed in 1986, with major improvements: a redefined dashboard, revised leaf springs, and improved headlights and front grille. Equipped with the 1.0 3 cylinders engine, these two models were capable to reach 19 km/l.
Between 1988 and 1994, were developed the second generation models. The three-door hatchback MF Barina was released in 1988, followed by the five-door model in 1990. At the end of 1991, the enhanced MH Barina reached the market, presenting upgraded suspensions, revised new front and rear bumpers and an improved interior.
The third generation was produced between 1994 and 2001. SB Barina was based on the Opel Corsa B and came with pretty large engine diversity, from 1.2 liter to 1.6 engine capacity.
XC Barina, the fourth generation, was released in 2001. This model was produced until 2005. The standard engine was a 1.4 liter 16-valve engine. However, an improved model was produced even the same year – SRi with a 1.8 liter engine.
The fifth generation, TK, was produced starting from 2005 until 2011. This time, Holden decided to rebadged the Daewoo Kalos hatchback. The model was equipped with a 1.6 liter twin-cam 16-valve variation. The updated and facelifted TK Barina was released in 2008, and came with a bolder grille facelift and new headlamps.
Finally, Barina’s sixth generation reached the market in 2011 and came with a sporty and dynamic design and highly improved engine’s performances. The TM model is based on the Chevrolet Aveo model and continues to be produced nowadays too. The TM series is actually a five-door hatchback, powered by a 1.6L DOHC 16-valve 4 cylinder petrol engine. It comes with a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. The 6th generation introduces a new infotainment system, Holden MyLink, with a 7 inches color touch-screen as the user’s interface. Holden MyLink provides Bluetooth audio streaming capabilities, Smartphone connectivity and it is also suitable for watching movies or videos, directly from the USB drive. Regarding its safety level, TM model is five-star rated by ANCAP. It is equipped with Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control System, Collapsible pedal release system, Electronic Brake Assist, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Anti-lock Braking System. In addition Barina TM includes 2 front airbags, 2 side impact airbags and 2 side curtain airbags and a Safety Cell mechanism.
In addition, the new Holden Barina comes in four sizes and shapes, in order to fulfill everyone’s expectations: CD hatch, CDX Hatch, CD Sedan and CDX Sedan. Concerning the car’s exterior, each of these models is equipped with the “Follow me Home” functionality, exposed halogen headlights and body colored power side mirrors. Regarding the seating domain, all models have 4-way adjustment of front passenger’s seat, six-way adjustment of driver’s seat and 60/40 folding rear seats. In addition, all TM types presents the following cabin comfort related items: air conditioning, front dome interior lamp, power windows, front & rear, vanity mirror with cover on driver and front passenger sunvisors and three cupholders – two located in the center console and one in the rear center console.
Therefore, Holden Barina represents a perfect mix of high quality technology, great safety level and spirited performance. Holden Company continuously invests time and money in order to find the most exquisite solutions for its vehicles.
